9 Facts About The Fine Wines Of Italy

Wines from Valtellina are light red and, after being aged for six years, turn garnet in color. The only exception is Sfursat. Valtellina wines tend towards distinct Nebbiolo aromas such as tar, violets and strawberries. They are also very dry and have a highly acidic and tannin content. They are quite unlike Piedmont’s Nebbiolos, Barolo and Barbaresco.

Valtellina wines are easy on the tongue and should not be aged too long. They pair very well pasta, risotto and lightly colored meat. American wine drinkers usually only see two Valtellina producers regularly. These are Nino Negri, selling for $15 to $18 or great Sfursats for $30 to $40 a bottle and Rainoldi, selling for $8 to $15.
